Understanding Error Code 57 and How to Resolve It

Error code 57 is a standard card-network or issuer decline code that indicates the cardholder’s bank has blocked the transaction due to restrictions on the card. This error is often accompanied by messages such as "Merchant does not support this card type" or "Transaction not permitted." Despite the wording, this issue originates from the card issuer, not the merchant.

Common Causes of Error Code 57

Error code 57 typically occurs due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Card Restrictions: The card is not enabled for certain types of transactions, such as online payments, foreign transactions, or specific merchant categories.

  • Security Blocks: The bank has placed a block on the card for security reasons, such as unusual activity or suspected fraud.

  • Geographic or Merchant Category Limits: The card issuer has restricted transactions based on location or merchant type.

Steps to Resolve Error Code 57

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Contact the Card Issuer:

    • Call the number on the back of the card to speak with the issuing bank.

    • Reference error code 57 and explain the transaction details, including the amount, merchant, and transaction type (e.g., online or in-person).

  2. Request to Lift Restrictions: Ask the bank to identify the specific restriction causing the decline and request that it be lifted or adjusted.

  3. Retry the Transaction: Once the bank confirms the card is enabled for the transaction, attempt the payment again.

  4. Use an Alternative Payment Method: If the issue persists, consider using a different card or payment method that is permitted for the transaction type.

Additional Notes

  • Standard Code: Error code 57 is a standard decline code used across card networks and issuing banks.

  • Misinterpretation: The error message may suggest a merchant issue, but it is a bank-side problem. Merchants can accept the card type, but the bank is blocking the transaction.

  • Re-enter Card Details: To rule out entry errors, re-enter the card information before contacting the bank.

By following these steps, most issues related to error code 57 can be resolved, allowing the transaction to proceed successfully.
